mEET The ACcies

When you visit Stockbridge Social, you're stepping into more than just a love letter to Scottish food and drink - you’re stepping into the heart of Scottish sporting history. We’re lucky to call Raeburn Place our home, nestled right beside Edinburgh Academical Football Club, affectionately known as the Accies. They’re not just our neighbours; they’re local legends.
Founded all the way back in 1857 by former pupils of Edinburgh Academy, the Accies are Scotland’s oldest rugby club - and one of the oldest in the world. They helped shape the game itself. In fact, Raeburn Place was the site of the world’s first international rugby match in 1871, when Scotland took on England and won. Seven of the players in that history-making team came from the Accies. So, yes – Scottish rugby was born right here in Stockbridge.
Today, the Accies remain a proud part of life in our community. They play at the top level of Scottish club rugby and continue to inspire generations of players and fans alike. With over 100 international players having come through their ranks, their impact on Scottish rugby is unmatched. But it’s not just about trophies and stats - the Accies have always been about community. From their support of youth rugby to their welcoming, inclusive spirit, they bring people together in a way few clubs can.
At Stockbridge Social, we’re proud to be here, pouring pints and serving food next to one of the most storied clubs in rugby history. So next time you pop by for a drink or a bite to eat, take a moment to soak up the atmosphere. You’re standing in the same place that made sporting history - and continues to bring Stockbridge together, one game at a time.
Here’s to the Accies: our neighbours, our local heroes, and the beating heart of this brilliant community.
